A Regional Look at Groundwater
Across our region water sustains daily life for residents, farms and our environmental ecosystems. The Loudoun County Groundwater Study published by the Loudoun County Preservation and Conservation Coalition brings awareness to important groundwater issues.
According to the report decades of drought, increased well depths and reduced groundwater recharge have led to measurable declines in water tables, drying wells and shrinking spring flows in Western Loudoun County. While this report focuses on Loudoun, many of the same geologic and hydrologic conditions extend into Maryland’s piedmont region including the Agricultural Reserve. The patterns described are worth noting as we consider how climate, development and land use interact with groundwater resilience in our region.
